Police Face Inquiry in Sabungero Disappearances
Fifteen police officers are now in custody as the Philippine National Police investigates their potential involvement in the disappearances of cockfighting enthusiasts. The investigation seeks to determine if the officers played a role in the missing persons case.
PNP Custody
According to PNP chief Gen. **Nicolas Torre III**, the officers under scrutiny are from various units. “Many of them are members of support units, some are from regional units, some from APC (Area Police Command),”
he stated during a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City.
Investigation Details
Of the 15 officers, one is nearing retirement, while three others have already been dismissed from service. **Torre** indicated that more police personnel might be implicated as the investigation progresses and witness testimonies are collected. The investigation comes amid growing concerns about police misconduct; a 2023 study found that public trust in law enforcement is declining, with only 42% expressing confidence in the police (OSAC Report 2023).
Whistleblower Protection
**Julie Patidongan**, also known as Totoy, is now under PNP custody and has applied for the Witness Protection Program. **Patidongan** previously claimed that the bodies of the missing *sabungeros* were disposed of in Taal Lake.
Commitment to Justice
**Torre** assured the public that investigators would exhaust all efforts to deliver justice to the families of the victims and purge the PNP of corrupt officers. He pledged a thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned
