Fairfield police responded to the shooting at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, according to a statement from the police department. Seven people were found with gunshot wounds at the scene, with one person dying from their injuries. The six surviving victims were transported to local hospitals. According to Chief Dan Marshall, at least three of those injured remained in critical condition.

The identities of the victims have not been released by authorities. The incident occurred on the eve of Halloween inside the shopping mall located about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. The shopping center boasts more than 130 shops and restaurants and was scheduled to host a mall-wide trick-or-treating event for children.

Investigation and Search for the Suspect

Investigators are working to identify the suspect or suspects responsible for the shooting, though police stated late on Oct. 30 that it remained unclear whether a single individual carried out the attack. Chief Marshall appealed to the public for assistance during a press conference just before midnight, noting that the mall is equipped with surveillance cameras that may hold vital footage.
