Illegal Online Gambling Ring Busted, Funds Totaling Billions of Won Seized
Seoul, South Korea – Police have dismantled a large-scale illegal online gambling operation, arresting individuals and seizing approximately 170 billion won (approximately $127 million USD) linked too 17,795 members across eight websites. The crackdown, announced by the Seoul Police Agency’s Criminal Mobile Team 1, targeted a network attempting to conceal illicit funds.
The operation sought to evade law enforcement by consolidating all gambling funds into a single account, according to investigators. Those implicated now face prosecution on gambling charges, with individuals involved having wagered over 5 million won (approximately $3,750 USD) through the sites. this case underscores the ongoing struggle to combat illegal gambling activities in South Korea,where only officially sanctioned horse racing tracks operated by the Korean Horse Racing Association are permitted.
“All racing site gambling is illegal, except for the official racetrack operated by the Korean Horse Racing Association,” stated lee Seung-ha of the Seoul Police Agency.
Yonhap News TV reported that police have forwarded the case to prosecutors. Authorities strongly warn against participation in any unauthorized online gambling platforms.
