August 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Death Toll Reaches 92 Following Lake Kariba Disaster

The death toll from an overloaded ferry that capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has risen to 92, according to local police figures cited by News24, as emergency personnel continue recovery operations across the massive inland waterway.

The aging vessel capsized in strong waves on Tuesday, August 10. It was traveling from the town of Kariba toward rural and fishing communities in Zimbabwe’s northwest region. In this area, public transportation options remain limited and road infrastructure is heavily damaged.

Severe Overcrowding Exceeded Vessel Capacity

Initial official estimates placed the passenger count at around 153 individuals. The ferry was authorized to carry a maximum of 90 passengers.

Subsequent police assessments indicate the actual number of travelers onboard may have been even higher.

Mounting Fatalities and Confirmed Survivors

Search and rescue teams have recovered additional bodies over successive days. The official fatality count climbed from 68 reported by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and Reuters, up to 80 according to Africanews and Reuters, and reaching 84 in updates reported by The Hindu before rising further to 92 confirmed deaths as reported by News24.

Alongside the mounting fatalities, Zimbabwe’s disaster management agency has confirmed that 77 people survived the capsizing and were successfully rescued.

Children Among the Victims as Searches Continue

Recovery operations remain focused on locating individuals still unaccounted for following the disaster. Police stated that search efforts are ongoing in an effort to locate and recover victims listed as missing.

Among those confirmed dead are 18 children, including 16 victims aged 10 or younger. The youngest casualty was identified by authorities as a 1-year-old infant.

Geography of the Vast Artificial Waterway

Lake Kariba was formed by the damming of the Zambezi River during the late 1950s and early 1960s. It spans more than 200 kilometers in length and reaches widths of up to 40 kilometers in certain sections.
