Zendaya, Meghan & More: Best Dressed Celebrities of the Week
Zendaya re-wore a white Vivienne Westwood gown to the Los Angeles premiere of her new film, The Drama, on Sunday, a choice that sparked immediate conversation among fashion observers. The dress, originally worn to the 2015 Oscars, is a signature Westwood design featuring off-the-shoulder draping and a corset waist, falling into a column skirt with a small train.
The actress explained her decision to Variety, framing the glance as a nod to the traditional bridal saying, “Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Zendaya told the publication she was “brainstorming with [stylist and image architect Law Roach] about how I would theme dress for this film, and I kind of remembered the saying.”
The re-wearing of the gown, eleven years after its initial debut, was part of a larger thematic approach to the premiere’s styling. According to Elle, Zendaya and Roach have been crafting red carpet moments that play on the “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” concept. The actress likewise wore a 1986 Eugene Alexander dress to the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards last week, previously worn by Whitney Houston and Carrie Bradshaw.
The premiere also showcased the style of Zendaya’s co-star, Robert Pattinson, who opted for a full Dior look. He wore a salmon-pink suit with shawl lapels, a forest green shirt, a pale yellow and white striped tie, and python print loafers, presenting a more contemporary and unconventional take on formal wear.
Beyond Zendaya’s choice, the week saw a trend toward streamlined elegance among other A-list stars. Anya Taylor-Joy was seen in New York City wearing a fitted black Balmain halter top and pencil skirt with leopard print detailing. Meghan Markle wore a navy Ralph Lauren column dress to a children’s rights gala in Beverly Hills. Chase Infiniti continued her collaboration with Louis Vuitton, appearing in a purple full-skirted ball gown, even as Sandra Huller chose a sculptural Prada gown adorned with satiny bows for the Project Hail Mary premiere.
While some observers have praised Zendaya’s thematic approach, others have questioned the impact of the choice. A recent article in Yahoo Entertainment noted that the bridal reference felt “far too obvious,” and that the repeated reliance on white felt predictable. The author suggested the look lacked the impact of Margot Robbie’s immersive Wuthering Heights press tour, which featured a more committed and consistent thematic approach.
Zendaya’s look was completed with Chopard jewels and pointed white pumps. Law Roach served as the stylist for the premiere appearance.
