Zaragoza Increases Pest Control Ahead of Warmer Spring

March 22, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Zaragoza’s city council is preparing to significantly expand its pest control program, responding to rising temperatures and urban growth that officials say are contributing to increased infestations. The new contract, currently in the bidding phase, will double the number of preventative treatments administered annually in the city’s sewer systems.

The initiative comes as the municipality grapples with a growing number of complaints related to rodents, insects, and other urban pests. In 2025, nearly 3,400 treatments for rat infestations were carried out, resulting in the capture of 2,700 pigeons, according to city data. The council’s Public Health Institute received citizen reports regarding 282 instances of pigeon-related issues during the same period.

Beyond rats and pigeons, the updated contract will integrate control measures for the black fly – previously addressed through a separate program – as well as efforts to manage chinches (bed bugs), ticks, and the tiger mosquito. The city also reported approximately 940 disinsection treatments across Zaragoza in 2025, in addition to the rat control measures. Around 100 treatments were conducted for bed bugs, primarily in vulnerable housing situations identified by municipal social services.

The expansion also addresses concerns about pest activity in specific areas of the city. Neighborhoods like Las Fuentes, Arrabal, Torrero, and Miralbueno have been identified as areas with a higher risk of rodent infestations. Outdoor seating areas at bars and restaurants are also receiving increased attention as potential breeding grounds for rodents.

The city council has allocated resources to address pest control in public spaces, including roads, parks, gardens, public schools, nurseries, and municipal buildings. Preventative measures are also being implemented along the city’s rivers to control mosquito populations. The council’s environmental department stated that the city’s growth is a key factor driving the need for a more comprehensive approach to pest management.

Citizens experiencing pest-related issues in public areas are encouraged to contact the Municipal Institute of Public Health by phone at 976 726068 or 010. Complaints can also be submitted via email to [email protected].
