Zaldy Co Arrested in Czech Republic: Updates on Deportation and Return
Czech authorities have confirmed they are in contact with police regarding the case of Zaldy Co, a Filipino national wanted in the Philippines on charges related to illegal recruitment and human trafficking, according to the Czech Justice Ministry.
The ministry stated on April 16, 2026, that whereas no concrete information about Co’s whereabouts or legal status has been received yet, official channels have been activated to coordinate with law enforcement agencies.
Co was apprehended in the Czech Republic in early April 2026 following an international alert issued by Philippine authorities. His arrest was confirmed by the Philippine National Police and reported by multiple Philippine news outlets, including Rappler and The Manila Times, which noted that Co is accused of operating an illegal recruitment network that exploited overseas Filipino workers.
The Philippine government, through Senator Francis Tolentino and Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, has formally requested Co’s deportation to face trial in the Philippines. Remulla emphasized that the Philippines has submitted the necessary extradition documents and is awaiting a response from Czech judicial authorities.
Czech officials have not disclosed whether Co is currently detained, released on bail, or subject to any legal proceedings within their jurisdiction. The Justice Ministry declined to speculate on timelines for a decision, stating only that the matter remains under active review.
Philippine diplomatic channels in Prague have been engaged in follow-up discussions, though no public statement has been issued by the Embassy of the Philippines in the Czech Republic regarding the case.
As of April 17, 2026, no extradition hearing has been scheduled, and Czech courts have not issued any public ruling on the Philippine request. Both governments continue to communicate through official legal liaison points.
