Eagles Edge Rusher Za’Darius Smith Retires After 11 NFL Seasons
Philadelphia Eagles outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, bringing an end too an 11-year career that included three Pro Bowl selections and 70.5 career sacks. Smith, who joined the Eagles after Week 1, led the team’s edge rushers wiht 1.5 sacks this season.
“I wish him the best. I really enjoyed having him on this football team while he was on this football team,” Head Coach Nick Sirianni told reporters monday afternoon.
Smith played for six different teams throughout his career, establishing himself as a consistent pass-rushing threat. He finishes his NFL journey having appeared in 145 regular-season games.
In a heartfelt instagram post, Smith reflected on his career, stating, “I knew this day would come – but now that it’s here, I’m feeling so many emotions I never expected… This game has given me the opportunity to meet great coaches, compete alongside some of the best players ever, and represent some of the greatest organizations in the league. Football has transformed my life and my family’s lives forever - and for that, I’m forever grateful.”
Smith also expressed gratitude to the fans, acknowledging their support throughout his career.”To the fans – the biggest thank you of all… From wearing my jerseys, collecting my cards, sending letters, sharing your opinions (good and tough ones alike), and most importantly – showing love. I felt it all.”
With Smith’s departure,the Eagles’ active edge rushers are now Jalyx Hunt,Azeez Ojulari,Joshua Uche,and Patrick Johnson. Ogbo Okoronkwo and Nolan Smith are currently on Injured Reserve.
Sirianni expressed confidence in the remaining defensive line personnel, stating, “As far as my confidence in the guys there on the defensive line, a lot of confidence in them. I like that position. I like the depth we have at that position. The numbers at how they play now will be distributed a little differently.”
