Sony Pictures Animation is developing an animated feature film based on the Marvel character Venom, with Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein attached to helm the project, according to announcements made on February 20 and 23, 2026.
The project marks the first animated installment in the Venom franchise, which began with the 2018 live-action film starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. Lipovsky and Stein’s involvement follows their recent work on the horror reboot Final Destination: Bloodlines, signaling a potential tonal shift for the character’s animated debut. Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach, producers on the previous Venom films, will return for this new venture.
Tom Hardy, who portrayed both Eddie Brock and voiced Venom in the live-action trilogy culminating in Venom: The Last Dance, is also involved as a producer. Kelly Marcel, the screenwriter for the live-action sequels, will also produce the animated film. No writer has yet been formally assigned to the project, but Sony Pictures Animation is reportedly establishing a writers’ room to develop the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The character of Venom, created by writer Bill Michelinie and artist Todd McFarlane, first appeared as a villain in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 in 1988 and gained significant popularity, eventually receiving his own solo comic series in 1993. The character’s initial big-screen appearance was in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, played by Topher Grace.
While the animated project is in early development, Sony Pictures Animation is actively seeking pitches for the story. The future direction of the franchise remains unclear following the dissolution of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC). The ending of Venom: The Last Dance included a post-credit scene hinting at future developments involving the symbiote god Knull, but the status of those plans in light of the SPUMC’s demise is currently unknown.
Sony’s animation division is currently focused on completing Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, scheduled for release on June 18, 2027. A release date for the animated Venom film has not been announced.
