Zac Williams announces retirement from AFL after 183 games
A 14-year career draws to a close
Zac Williams has announced his retirement from the AFL, ending a 14-year career that spanned 183 games across the Greater Western Sydney Giants and Carlton. The 32-year-old confirmed the decision on social media Sunday, declaring “after 14 years it’s all said and done”.
The veteran’s final season was truncated by a fractured larynx sustained during VFL play, limiting him to nine appearances in 2026. Williams’ exit follows a career defined by both high-level impact and recurring injury setbacks. His transition into retirement comes after Carlton delisted him at the conclusion of the 2026 season, a campaign that saw the club exit in an elimination final against Geelong.

From GWS rookie to expansion staple
Williams’ journey in professional football began as a member of the Giants’ Academy. After missing selection in the 2012 draft, he was picked up by GWS with selection 54 in the Rookie Draft later that year. He debuted in round five that year, quickly establishing himself as a significant contributor and earning a Rising Star nomination. By the time he left the Giants at the end of 2020, he had recorded 113 senior games, including appearances in the club’s inaugural grand final appearance.
Injury hurdles at Princes Park
His relocation to Princes Park after the 2020 season changed his career direction. Williams signed a six-year contract with Carlton, but his tenure in navy blue was frequently interrupted by physical challenges. A notable ACL injury sustained during pre-season training forced him to miss the entirety of the 2023 campaign. In total, he added 70 games for the Blues, though his availability remained a consistent hurdle for the club’s list management strategy.
A quiet exit from the league
Following his delisting, there was speculation regarding a potential lifeline elsewhere. Williams had been considered as a candidate for the AFL’s Category B First Nations provision, yet no club pursued the option. The lack of a suitor ultimately solidified his decision to step away from the sport.
Carlton’s roster reset
Williams’ retirement closes a chapter for Carlton, which faced significant roster turnover following a 2026 season that began with a 1-8 record and a coaching change from then-coach Michael Voss.
The question of whether Williams might have continued under different circumstances remains unanswered, as the utility was unable to secure a roster spot for the coming season. Leaving the club ends a career that began during the Giants’ expansion years and ended with a high-profile transfer to Carlton.
