Yves Vanderhaeghe says Charles Vanhoutte is a reliable team player
Feyenoord midfielder Charles Vanhoutte has quickly established himself as a vital defensive presence in Rotterdam, crediting a tactical alignment with the coaching staff for how quickly he fit in after moving from Cercle Brugge. ESPN.nl reported that the Belgian player finds the team’s style of play perfectly suited to his strengths as the squad prepares for upcoming Eredivisie fixtures. Vanhoutte noted that the hospitality and directness of his new surroundings helped him settle quickly, explaining that ball recovery is something he does well and enjoys, though he admits some luck is involved while stressing that belief leads to more intercepted balls. Vanhoutte stated that he is never satisfied, continually sets new daily goals to make progress, and has never minded criticism or taken it personally, instead using it to prove people wrong or to advance.
Tactical Awareness and Collective Focus Shape Midfield Impact
Vanhoutte built a reputation for tireless work rates during his time at Cercle Brugge, a trait highlighted by former manager Yves Vanderhaeghe in an interview with ELFvoetbal, as cited by FR12.nl. Vanderhaeghe described him as a player a manager can completely rely upon, noting that he is someone who always plays for the team rather than just himself and shows a deeper interest in tactics than other players. ESPN.nl noted that Vanhoutte feels the clarity of instruction from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s staff has eased his transition to Dutch football. While attacking players such as Anis Hadj Moussa, Luciano Valente and Gjivai Zechiël capture the majority of media attention, Vanhoutte maintains a focus on defensive disruption and ball recovery, stating that he is at peace with this division of attention because those players deserve it and he simply tries to execute his role and help those around him.
Comparisons to former Dutch internationals have surfaced following strong performances in high-profile fixtures. Vanhoutte acknowledged that comparisons to Timmy Simons carry some merit given their shared defensive responsibilities, though he prefers to concentrate on his own assignments on the pitch.
Upcoming Challenges and National Team Ambitions
Feyenoord hosts Fortuna Sittard on Saturday afternoon in a match scheduled to be broadcast live on ESPN 3 starting at 16:30, a fixture Vanhoutte described to ESPN.nl as a potentially tricky encounter against a defensively disciplined opponent that defends in a solid block, lies in wait for the counterattack, and fields quality players up front in an atypical style that is not truly Dutch. Beyond club commitments, the midfielder maintains pragmatic ambitions regarding a potential return to the Belgian national team under Mark van Bommel, acknowledging that he takes things match by match and remains level-headed enough to realize there are numerous high-quality central midfielders in the national squad, having previously been called up a few times.
