Young professionals entering the Swiss workforce command a median full-time salary of 90’000 Swiss

October 6, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Young professionals entering the Swiss workforce command a median full-time salary of 90’000 Swiss francs, while the overall median wage across the profession climbs to 126’666 francs, according to the Salärstudie 2026/27 published by Swiss Engineering.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • Full-time median earnings for Swiss engineers and architects reached 126’666 francs in 2026, recovering from a slight dip the previous year.
  • New graduates earn a median starting salary of 90’000 francs, with digital skills rated highly by employers even as practical on-the-job experience lags.

Salaries and Sector Disparities Across Swiss Engineering

The annual salary benchmark reveals notable divides depending on industry and employer type. Public administration leads compensation averages at 145’000 francs, followed closely by the IT sector at 135’000 francs and the chemical and pharmaceutical industries at 132’000 francs. Traditional heavystays such as the construction sector and the mechanical and metal industries lag behind at 120’000 francs, according to the Swiss Engineering data.

Overall, median earnings across all tracked disciplines rebounded to 126’666 francs this year, improving on the 122’000 francs recorded in the prior survey period. Despite these lucrative upper-tier figures, entry-level professionals across all tracked branches start at a uniform median baseline of 90’000 francs for a full-time workload.

Digital Proficiency Versus Practical Experience Gaps

Swiss educational pathways earn high marks from industry participants, with 70 percent rating current academic training as fairly or very good. Employers specifically praise the digital competencies of recent graduates, a metric rated favorably by 74 percent of respondents. General technical knowledge and teamwork abilities also score well in the evaluation.

Conversely, respondents point to distinct vulnerabilities in newcomer profiles. Practical on-the-job experience and customer orientation emerge as recurring weaknesses. Industry participants responding to the Swiss Engineering questionnaire frequently call for a deeper practical focus integrated directly into technical curricula to bridge this transition gap.

Sector Attractiveness and Recruitment Obstacles

Industry perception remains a hurdle for talent acquisition. Only 50 percent of surveyed professionals view their respective branches as attractive to incoming talent. IT and the chemical-pharmaceutical sector enjoy strong positive sentiment, whereas construction and the mechanical-metal sectors face more critical assessments.

When asked what blocks effective recruitment, 41 percent of respondents cite heavy workloads, while an equal 41 percent point to the prevailing wage level. Alongside compensation, incoming talent increasingly demands flexible working hours and remote work options.

Members of Swiss Engineering receive the complete salary study free of charge, while non-members can acquire the documentation for 150 francs.
