Woman Considers Preventative Stomach Removal Amid Family history of Rare Cancer
Amsterdam – Yasmin is grappling with a challenging decision: teh preventative removal of her stomach due to a rare, hereditary form of stomach cancer that has already claimed the lives of close family members. Facing a heightened risk, she is weighing the option of a prophylactic gastrectomy to safeguard her future and remain present for her son.
“I want to be there for my son for provided that possible. So having my stomach removed preventively may become a realistic option. That is the best thing you can do,” Yasmin stated. “But for now, if the scan and examinations are good, I can postpone that for a while. But if something is found, the stomach must be removed as quickly as possible.” This form of cancer, linked to a specific genetic mutation, has devastated Yasmin’s family, prompting her to consider drastic measures.
The situation is particularly poignant for Yasmin’s niece, who recently learned she does not carry the gene responsible for the disease. “My mother was the first to get the disease and then died. After a year, my aunt also became ill and she also died. Then my sister and I had tests. This showed that miraculously we are not gene carriers. I am very grateful, but it also feels as if Yasmin is taking care of it for us. It feels very unfair.”
Fortunately, recent stomach examination results for Yasmin have been positive, allowing her to delay the preventative surgery. She is scheduled for a follow-up check-up in one year to monitor her condition.
