Yankees’ Cody Bellinger Sidelines for 4-6 Weeks with Grade 2 Hamstring Strain

July 28, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and is expected to miss four to six weeks of action, according to the official team announcement. The injury occurred while Bellinger was running the bases during a 3-1 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Diagnostic Timeline and Injury Extent

Bellinger felt tightness in his hamstring while rounding first base on a double in the eighth inning on Saturday night in Philadelphia. Following the game, he traveled to New York for further medical evaluations on Monday, which confirmed the Grade 2 strain. Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided an update prior to the team's series opener against the Chicago White Sox. "So the good thing is he’s obviously able to move around right now," Boone said.

Compounding Roster Depletion in the Bronx

The loss of Bellinger deals a heavy blow to a Yankees lineup already missing key offensive anchors. Reigning American League MVP Aaron Judge has been sidelined since May 31 due to a fractured rib, while designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton has been out of the lineup since April 24 with a strained right calf. Entering Monday’s slate of games, the Yankees sat three games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay front-runners. “We’ve had some tough injuries to some really important people,” Boone acknowledged. “But again, that is part of it. As I say, the season waits for no one.”

Front-Office Strategy and Roster Adjustments

However, Boone downplayed the immediate impact of Bellinger’s injury on general manager Brian Cashman’s deadline planning. “I get the sense that they have been working on this in different ways, shape and form for the last several weeks, getting ready for trade deadline stuff,” Boone said. “I expect them to try and do all they can to improve our team, but again, you never know how that’s going to shake out.” To cover the outfield in Bellinger’s absence, Max Schuemann started in left field against the White Sox, Spencer Jones was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to play center, and Jasson Domínguez slotted into right field.

Player Production and Recovery Updates

Bellinger, 31, signed a five-year, $162.5 million contract with the Yankees last winter and earned MVP honors at the All-Star Game on July 14 in Philadelphia. Across 102 games this season, he is batting .259 with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs. Meanwhile, other injured veterans are progressing through their respective rehab protocols. Stanton, travelling with the team in Chicago, is advancing his running program. “The strength stuff, explosive stuff he’s doing in the weight room has been very good,” Boone noted. “So we just got to get him up to a level obviously on the running side of things to be able to go out there.” Pitching reinforcements are also on the horizon, with left-hander Carlos Rodón returning from elbow inflammation and right-hander Clarke Schmidt throwing again this week following Tommy John surgery recovery.
