Yamal Hat-Trick Fuels Barcelona’s La Liga Lead | Villarreal 1-4 Barça

February 28, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Lamine Yamal, at 18 years vintage, scored his first career hat-trick Saturday as Barcelona defeated Villarreal 4-1, extending their lead atop the La Liga table to four points.

Yamal opened the scoring in the 28th minute, curling a low shot into the bottom corner after a turnover forced by Fermin Lopez. He doubled Barcelona’s advantage just nine minutes later, driving at the Villarreal defense and unleashing a powerful strike into the top corner. The goals marked a dominant first-half performance for the Catalan club.

Villarreal responded early in the second half through Pape Gueye, who scored from close range after a corner was not cleared by Barcelona. However, Yamal quickly restored the two-goal cushion in the 68th minute, finishing with a precise left-footed shot after a through ball from Pedri. Robert Lewandowski added a fourth goal in stoppage time, completing the scoring.

The victory at the renovated Camp Nou was particularly significant for Barcelona, who have a perfect record at their home stadium this season. It also provides a boost of confidence ahead of their Copa del Rey semifinal second leg on Tuesday, where they face a four-goal deficit.

Yamal’s performance has drawn widespread praise, with many observers noting his exceptional dribbling ability and improved finishing. The hat-trick puts him within reach of a La Liga record for most goals before turning 19, currently held by another player. With 12 games remaining in the season, Yamal has the opportunity to surpass the existing mark.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick made a tactical adjustment in the second half, substituting Olmo for Pedri, a move that helped regain control of the midfield and ultimately contributed to Yamal’s third goal. Villarreal, despite a brief resurgence after halftime, were unable to contain Yamal’s attacking threat throughout the match.

Real Madrid, currently trailing Barcelona by four points, are scheduled to play on Monday. The outcome of their match will further shape the La Liga title race.
