Yahoo! JAPAN No Longer Available in EEA & UK – April 6, 2022

Yahoo! JAPAN ceased offering services to users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, citing difficulties in maintaining a continuous service environment in those regions. The move, which went largely unnoticed amidst other global events, effectively ended access to the platform for a significant number of European and British users.

According to a notice posted by Yahoo! JAPAN, the decision stemmed from challenges in adhering to regulatory requirements and providing consistent service delivery within the EEA and the UK. The company stated that, with the exception of specific services detailed on their website, access would be terminated as of 11:00 AM Japan Standard Time on April 6, 2022. Users with automatically renewing subscriptions, such as Yahoo! Premium, were advised to cancel their accounts.

While the majority of Yahoo! JAPAN’s services became inaccessible, certain offerings remained available. These included Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Card, and ebookjapan, although the company noted that some functions within Yahoo! Mail would be restricted. Details regarding these limitations were published in Japanese.

The discontinuation of services did not affect users accessing Yahoo! JAPAN from within Japan. The company clarified that its platform remained fully operational for those connecting from Japanese territory. This distinction suggests the issue was specifically related to serving users within the EEA and UK, rather than a broader operational restructuring.

The move occurred following the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, commonly known as Brexit. While Yahoo! JAPAN did not explicitly link the service termination to Brexit, the timing raises questions about the potential impact of the UK’s latest regulatory landscape on the company’s ability to operate effectively in the region.

As of February 16, 2026, Yahoo! JAPAN has not publicly revisited the decision to withdraw services from the EEA and the UK, and no announcements have been made regarding a potential return to these markets. The company has not responded to requests for further comment on the reasons behind the continued service restrictions.
