Yahoo! JAPAN No Longer Available in EEA & UK – April 6, 2022

On April 6, 2022, Yahoo! JAPAN ceased providing services to users located within the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom, citing operational difficulties in maintaining consistent service quality. The move significantly curtailed access to Yahoo! JAPAN’s offerings for a substantial user base.

According to a notice published by Yahoo! JAPAN, the decision stemmed from challenges in providing a continuous service environment within these regions. While the majority of services became inaccessible, certain offerings remained available, including Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Card, and ebookjapan. However, Yahoo! JAPAN noted that some functions within Yahoo! Mail would be restricted.

The company advised customers with automatic monthly subscription renewals, such as Yahoo! Premium, to cancel their subscriptions. Users with existing paid services were also cautioned to be mindful of their service periods. The change also impacted individuals planning travel from Japan, as access restrictions applied based on location.

The service discontinuation followed a period of consideration, with Yahoo! JAPAN determining that maintaining operations in the EEA and UK was unsustainable. Archyde reported on the curtailment of services, highlighting the strategic shift in the company’s digital landscape.

Yahoo! JAPAN clarified that access to its services remained available to users accessing them from within Japan. The company expressed its apologies for any inconvenience caused by the change and thanked users for their understanding.

The move mirrors a similar announcement made in 2022, as reported by Owler, detailing the discontinuation of services in the affected regions. The company did not provide a timeline for potential future reinstatement of services in the EEA or UK.
