Yahoo! JAPAN No Longer Available in EEA & UK – April 6, 2022

On April 6, 2022, Yahoo! JAPAN ceased offering most of its services to users located in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom. The company cited difficulties in maintaining a compliant service environment as the reason for the change, effectively ending access for a significant user base.

The decision impacted a wide range of Yahoo! JAPAN services, with the exception of Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Card, and ebookjapan. According to a notice published by Yahoo! JAPAN, some functions within Yahoo! Mail were restricted for users in the affected regions. The company advised users with automatically renewing subscriptions, such as Yahoo! Premium, to cancel their accounts.

The move followed a period of increasing scrutiny regarding data regulations and privacy concerns within the EEA and the UK. Even as Yahoo! JAPAN did not explicitly detail the specific regulatory hurdles it faced, the company stated that providing a continuous service environment had become “difficult.” This mirrors a broader trend of technology companies reassessing their operations in Europe, as highlighted by recent industry analysis.

Users accessing Yahoo! JAPAN services from within Japan remained unaffected by the change. The company emphasized that its services remained fully accessible when accessed from Japanese territory. This geographical restriction underscored the specific challenges Yahoo! JAPAN faced in complying with European and British regulations.

Yahoo! JAPAN acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the service disruption and expressed gratitude for the understanding of its users. The company provided a link to information regarding the member states of the EEA, but offered no timeline for a potential return to the region. As of February 10, 2026, Yahoo! JAPAN services remain unavailable in the EEA and the UK, with the exceptions noted in their 2022 announcement.
