Xpeng Plans European Autonomous Driving Launch by 2027
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng announced at the Paris Motor Show that its artificial intelligence software can adapt its autonomous driving systems to any European country in just 14 days, targeting a full commercial launch by 2027 without feature restrictions.
Two Weeks to Calibrate Software Across Borders
Liu Xianming, head of the AI division at Xpeng, stated during the Paris event that the company’s latest artificial intelligence models require only one ten-thousandth of the data volume used for the initial training phase to calibrate software for a new European market. “We can use a very limited number of local data to align ourselves here,” Liu Xianming said.
The firm plans to deploy its Navigation Guided Pilot system across Europe starting in 2027. Unlike competitors that currently offer restricted software versions in the region, Xpeng intends to deliver its full suite of capabilities from day one, covering both complex urban environments and multi-lane highways.
Xpeng Competes with Tesla in European Markets
Xpeng’s timeline places it in direct competition with established market players like Tesla, which has faced extended regulatory scrutiny across the 27 European Union member states for its Full Self-Driving technology. He Xiaopeng, chief executive officer at Xpeng, stated that he is very eager to directly confront the leading smart driving systems currently operating globally.

The company maintains that its technology already recognizes country-specific road signs, yields to cyclists, and responds to local driving behaviors typical of European cities. However, the primary challenge remains securing formal approval from European safety regulators before the software can roll out to consumers. Navigating these homologation requirements often demands rigorous technical compliance reviews, pushing automakers to work closely with specialized regulatory compliance consultants and automotive engineering firms to meet stringent regional safety standards.
Deployment Timeline Facing Regulatory Scrutiny
While the company targets a 2027 market entry, regulatory bodies have not yet greenlit the full feature set for public roads. Obtaining certification requires proving absolute system reliability under diverse local conditions, a hurdle that continues to pace the deployment timelines of autonomous software developers across the continent.
