Xbox Introduces Disc to Digital Feature to Convert Physical Games into Digital Licenses
Microsoft is launching a new feature for the Xbox ecosystem that allows owners of physical game discs to secure a digital license for their titles, according to reports from Konzolista.cz and Game Press. Coded internally as Project Positron, the initiative is scheduled to begin testing for Xbox Insiders on August 31, 2026, as detailed by Game Press.
How Disc-to-Digital Works for Xbox Players
The system lets players insert a supported physical disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console to automatically trigger a digital entitlement linked to their account, according to Game Press. Once the license is assigned, users can play the game without keeping the disc in the drive, while retaining a fully functional physical copy. Game Press reports that the feature also extends compatibility to Xbox Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming for supported titles. The digital license remains bound to the specific disc; if a user sells or lends the physical copy, the digital license transfers to the new account that launches the game.

Supported Platforms and Publisher Limitations
Thousands of titles will be supported at launch, with additional games rolling out progressively, according to Game Press. Asha Sharma stated in a social media post cited by Game Press that the program begins with thousands of eligible titles. Compatibility covers Xbox One discs, Xbox Series X discs, multi-disc games, and discs bundled with consoles. However, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles are excluded due to manufacturing methods used for older discs, as reported by Game Press. Furthermore, participation requires approval from individual game publishers.
Industry Context and Preservation Strategy
Microsoft characterizes the feature as part of a broader game preservation strategy aimed at protecting player libraries across hardware generations, according to Game Press. This rollout arrives following announcements by Sony that it will end physical disc production for the PlayStation lineup by 2028, alongside reminders to consumers that digital game purchases convey licenses rather than permanent ownership, as noted by Game Press.
