Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy sustained a concussion during practice, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. While the immediate concern is a potential short absence, there is also a long-term consideration regarding concussions unless he experiences another one soon.
the Chiefs’ regular season opener is scheduled for Friday, September 5, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, against the Los Angeles Chargers. This provides Worthy with over a month to recover.
Kansas City selected Worthy with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, trading up to secure him after he set a new 40-yard dash record at the NFL Scouting Combine with a time of 4.21 seconds.
In his rookie season, Worthy participated in all 17 regular-season games for the Chiefs, starting 13. He recorded 59 receptions for 638 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Additionally, he carried the ball 20 times for 104 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Following his accomplished rookie campaign, Worthy expressed his goal for his second season: to deepen his understanding of the offense and Coach Andy Reid’s playbook. “Just having a better understanding for the playbook,” Worthy told reporters on Sunday. “Now it’s another year in the offense so I have a better understanding for the plays, a better understanding for the zones, what teams are going to throw at me. So just understanding schematics.”
During his three years at the University of Texas, Worthy established himself as one of the nation’s top wide receivers and contributed to a growing trend of Texas receivers being recognized in the NFL Draft.
Worthy played in 39 career games for the Longhorns, accumulating 197 catches for 2,755 receiving yards and 26 receiving touchdowns. He also contributed on special teams, returning 40 punts for 564 yards and one touchdown. Notably, he led the FBS in punt return yards with 371 during the 2023 season.
