Wyoming Life: Ranches, Harvest Hosts & Road to Glacier National Park

March 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Wyoming’s Open Roads and Quiet Hospitality

GILLETTE, WYOMING – Interstate 90 stretches across Wyoming’s northeast corner, offering a glimpse into the state’s vast landscapes and a slower pace of life. Recent travelers report favorable road conditions along the route, though a height restriction of 15 feet 5 inches is in place between milepost 205.700 and 206.100. As of Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) reports dry conditions between the Montana state line and Ranchester, and continuing eastward toward Gillette.

Travelers seeking a respite from the open road are finding welcoming stops along the way, including “Our Wyoming Life,” a Harvest Host location just off I-90 near Gillette. Harvest Host allows self-contained campers to stay overnight at various venues free of charge. The site offers a unique experience, a contrast to the more typical stops along the interstate.

The region surrounding Gillette is characterized by rolling hills, grasslands, and expansive views, typical of northeastern Wyoming’s high plains. Gillette itself is known as the “Energy Capital of the Nation” due to its significant coal mining operations, with coal trains and mining activity visible from the highway. However, services are limited outside of Gillette, making planning essential for those traveling through.

WYDOT reports no advisories or restrictions along I-90 in the area as of 6:11 AM Mountain Time on March 25, 2026. Construction is underway on I-90 at Inyan Kara Creek, between mileposts 205.7 and 206.1, with completion expected by October 30, 2026. The project, overseen by Isaac Finkle of WYDOT and carried out by McGarvin-Moberly Construction Co., involves milling, overlay, and structural work.

Wyoming is the tenth largest state in the U.S. But has the lowest population density, a characteristic reflected in the wide-open spaces and rural setting along I-90. The state’s semi-arid climate receives less than 10 inches of rain annually in many areas. The landscape transitions from the Great Plains in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west.

Recent reports indicate a reckless driver in a gray GMC Sierra was reported on I-90 near Exit 126 on March 23, 2026, prompting a response from Campbell County Sheriff’s deputies.

While Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are popular destinations in Wyoming, travelers heading north toward Montana are experiencing a different side of the state, passing through vast fields of wheat and encountering the remnants of the state’s agricultural past, including old granaries and snow fences. The journey continues toward Glacier National Park, with the landscape gradually shifting as travelers move further north.
