Wynne Evans Hospitalized After Suicide Attempt Following ‘Strictly’ Appearance
Opera singer Wynne Evans revealed he was hospitalized after attempting suicide following his experience on the BBC‘s Strictly Come Dancing. Evans shared the details during an appearance on good Morning Britain with hosts Richard madeley and Susanna Reid, attributing his mental health crisis to intense scrutiny from social media and the press.
“I went on a dancing show and ended up trying to take my own life,” Evans stated. “I did end up in hospital – somebody found me, rung an ambulance and luckily for me, I’m here today.”
He explained he felt driven to the attempt believing it was the only way to stop the relentless harassment. “They hound and hound and hound you. It’s been interesting watching the Caroline Flack program of late because in your head, you go, ‘The only way I can make these people stop is by taking my life,'” Evans said. He later realized the act would punish himself and his family, stating, “You’re punishing not them, you’re actually punishing yourself and your family.I’ve realised that since but at the time, I thought the only way I coudl make this noise stop in my head.”
Looking back, Evans expressed regret about participating in Strictly without a full understanding of the potential impact. “I wish I’d had a better insight into it before I went into it,” he said.He added the experience ultimately led to a greater understanding of his mental health and a desire to help others struggling with similar issues.
The BBC responded to previous concerns raised by Evans regarding his mental health, stating they “provided thorough duty of care…that included support by wellbeing professionals.” The BBC also confirmed Evans had “direct access to a designated contact…available to assist him at anytime” and had been offered continued support after his contract concluded.
