Wuthering Heights: New Film Brings Tempestuous Romance to Cinemas

A new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights premiered in Italian cinemas today, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Directed by Emerald Fennell, the film, titled Cime tempestose, is already generating buzz for its bold reimagining of the classic love story.

The film follows the intense and destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire moors. Margot Robbie portrays Catherine Earnshaw, although Jacob Elordi embodies Heathcliff. The cast also includes Shazad Latif as Edgar Linton, Alison Oliver as Isabella Linton, and Hong Chau as Nelly Dean. Younger versions of Catherine and Heathcliff are played by Charlotte Mellington and Owen Cooper, respectively.

Fennell, who wrote and co-produced the film, alongside Josey McNamara and Robbie, through her production company LuckyChap Entertainment, has opted for a 136-minute runtime and a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The film is a co-production between Warner Bros. Pictures, MRC, Lie Still, and LuckyChap Entertainment, with Warner Bros. Entertainment Italia handling distribution in Italy.

The film’s opening scene, as described in initial reports, depicts a public hanging, intended to evoke a sense of the era’s harsh realities and the emotional turmoil at the heart of the narrative. Linus Sandgren served as the film’s cinematographer, with a musical score composed by Anthony Willis and featuring contributions from Charli XCX.

Italian voice actors have been confirmed for the dubbed version, including Domitilla D’Amico as Catherine Earnshaw and Fabrizio De Flaviis as Heathcliff. Other Italian voice cast members include Guendalina Ward as Nelly Dean and Francesco Pezzulli as Edgar Linton.

Screenings are currently scheduled across Italy, including multiple showings at UCI Cinemas, The Space Cinema, and Metropolis Cinemas. At Metropolis Cinemas in Rome, for example, the film is scheduled for multiple showings through February 25th, with ticket prices varying between €6.00 and €7.00. The Metropolis schedule includes a VOS (original version with subtitles) screening on February 24th.
