Wu Yize Stuns Judd Trump to Reach Shenzhen Open Final
Wu Yize Defeats Judd Trump to Reach Shenzhen Open Final
Overcoming a slow start in which he dropped the initial frame, reigning world champion Wu Yize powered past Judd Trump with a 6-1 victory in the Shenzhen Open semi-finals. Playing at the Bao’an Sports Centre, the 22-year-old reeled off six frames on the spin to arrange a Sunday showdown for the title against fellow countryman Yuan Sijun final against Yuan Sijun on Sunday.
The 2019 world champion and world number two, Trump, grabbed the early initiative by capturing the first frame on the back of a 77 break. Capitalizing on a series of mistakes, Wu took command of the messy encounter by registering three breaks exceeding 50 before closing out the match with a 110 clearance. The result avenged Wu’s semi-final defeat by Trump at the Shanghai Masters earlier this year.
With this victory, Wu will move above Trump and into second in the world rankings after the final. Having triumphed at the Shanghai Masters in August, Trump entered the last four carrying strong momentum after sweeping aside Mark Selby 5-0 in the previous round.
Yuan Sijun Advances to Face Wu After Deciding Frame Against Jimmy Robertson
Yuan Sijun, 26, reached his first ranking final after a 6-5 victory over England’s Jimmy Robertson. The semi-final contest, played over a maximum of 11 frames, went all the way to a tense decider that lasted 50 minutes and generated 177 points. Facing a tricky snooker on the final red, Robertson managed to claw back 41 penalty points, but Yuan eventually held his nerve to clear the table up to the pink.
Entering the tournament ranked 33rd in the world, Yuan stands to climb near the top 16 if he claims the championship title. Speaking after his win, Yuan said his first ranking final had come a little bit late after difficult years since the pandemic in 2020. Wu stated that he hoped the pair could put on a great match for everyone, adding that both players would give everything to win the trophy.
