Gnat Attack: Understanding and Combating “Knees,” Nature’s Tiny Biting Insects
While mosquitoes often dominate discussions about biting insects, a lesser-known but equally irritating pest exists: the gnat, sometimes referred to as “knees.” These tiny insects, measuring a mere 1 to 4 millimeters, can cause significant discomfort. According to the Agency for Nature and Forest, Belgium alone is home to 45 species of these insects.
Habitat and Breeding Grounds
Gnats thrive in moist environments, making certain areas especially susceptible to infestations. These include:
- brackish water swamps
- Fens
- Wetlands
- Swallowing and salt marshes
- Tidal areas
- Manure heaps
- Moist zones in forests and grasslands
- River banks
The Bite: A Different Kind of irritation
Like mosquitoes, female gnats require blood meals to reproduce. however, their feeding method differs substantially. entomologist Peter Berx explains: The difference is that the mosquito stabs deep, while the knee bites a hole in the skin to get blood.
This biting action, rather than a piercing stab, contributes to the increased irritation associated with gnat bites.
The discomfort doesn’t end with the bite itself. That is because of the substances that the insect releases when it bites or sticks. The body responds differently,
Berx notes. This reaction often results in more intense itching and inflammation compared to mosquito bites.
Protecting Yourself from gnat Bites
Several strategies can definitely help minimize your exposure to gnats and reduce the likelihood of being bitten:
- Wear long clothing: Covering exposed skin is a simple yet effective deterrent.
- Use insect repellent: Products containing DEET or Icardine/Picardine/Saltidine are effective against gnats. Always read and follow the package instructions carefully.
- Install mosquito nets: Fine-meshed nets on windows and doors can prevent gnats from entering your home.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While most gnat bites result in localized irritation, some individuals may experience more severe reactions. In certain specific cases, their bite can cause severe allergic reactions,
warns the Agency for Nature and Forest. if you experience symptoms such as widespread rash, difficulty breathing,or swelling, seek immediate medical attention.
