Wordle Creator’s New Game & Timothée Chalamet’s Ambition: A Cautionary Tale

March 22, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Josh Wardle, the creator of the viral word puzzle Wordle, has released a fresh online game, Parseword, prompting reflection on ambition and the challenges of following up a global phenomenon. The launch comes as actor Timothée Chalamet’s highly publicized and ultimately unsuccessful Oscar campaign for “Marty Supreme” concluded, offering a contrasting case study in the pursuit of success. Wordle, acquired by The New York Times in January 2022 for a seven-figure sum, unexpectedly became a global sensation, with players sharing their daily results widely on social media. Wardle, a Welsh software engineer who previously worked at Reddit and Pinterest, initially created the game as a private pastime for his partner, Palak Shah. The game’s simplicity and daily challenge resonated with millions, turning Wardle into an overnight celebrity. The New Yorker reported that the sale to the New York Times, while financially successful, left Wardle feeling “discombobulated, even borderline depressed” due to the sudden fame and pressure. He had previously created interactive projects for Reddit, including “The Button” in 2015, which involved a communal countdown timer and attracted over a million participants before expiring three months later. This experience demonstrated Wardle’s knack for creating engaging, socially-driven online experiences. Parseword’s debut coincided with the culmination of Chalamet’s Oscar campaign, which was marked by increasingly bold statements about his ambition. Chalamet publicly expressed a desire to be considered among “the greats,” stating at the 2025 Sag Awards, “The truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness.” He further emphasized his commitment, claiming to give “170% in everything I’m doing.” These pronouncements, while initially met with acceptance, drew criticism as the campaign progressed, with some observers finding them arrogant. Chalamet’s promotional efforts for “Marty Supreme” included increasingly audacious claims, including a statement that his performance represented “top-level shit.” A subsequent interview with film YouTuber Margaret Gardiner, where he made these remarks, has since been removed from her channel. Chalamet did not win the Oscar, with Michael B. Jordan taking home the award for his role in “Sinners.” The contrasting trajectories of Wardle and Chalamet raise questions about the nature of ambition and the potential pitfalls of pursuing success. While some, having achieved significant recognition and financial reward, may be content, others remain driven to achieve more. As Polly Hudson, a freelance writer, noted, there appear to be “two types of people in this realm: the haves and the have-yachts.” The New York Times continues to publish daily Wordle puzzles and the game remains popular. It is currently March 21, 2026, and puzzle number 1736 has been edited by Tracy Bennett. The future of Parseword, and whether Wardle will achieve similar success, remains to be seen.
