Wolves Slo Aston Villa: Premier League Update & Table Standings

February 27, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Molineux, marking only their second league win in 29 games. The result offers a temporary reprieve for the struggling Premier League side, but relegation remains a significant threat.

João Gomes opened the scoring after an hour, capitalizing on a breakaway initiated by Ross Barkley. Rodrigo Gomes added a second goal late in the match, sealing the win for Wolves. The victory brings their point total to 13, leaving them firmly at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Despite the win, Wolves face a daunting task to avoid relegation. They trail Nottingham Forest, currently in a safe position, by 14 points, though Forest has played two fewer games.

Norwegian international David Møller Wolfe was an unused substitute in the match. Wolfe joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2025 from AZ Alkmaar for a reported €10 million plus €2.1 million in add-ons, signing a five-year deal. He has made 14 Premier League appearances this season, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

Aston Villa, currently third in the Premier League, were frustrated by the result. Manager Unai Emery expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance. Villa remain three points ahead of Manchester United and six points ahead of both Chelsea and Liverpool, though all three trailing teams have a game in hand.

The match comes amid reported interest in Wolfe from Aston Villa. Sources indicate Villa are actively exploring left-back options in the January transfer window, with the 23-year-old identified as a potential target. Brighton & Hove Albion have also been linked with a move for Wolfe, particularly if Wolves’ relegation concerns deepen. Wolfe is reportedly open to a move that would offer him stability and continued development.

Wolves previously secured a Premier League win on January 3rd, defeating West Ham at home. The club sold forward Jørgen Strand Larsen to Crystal Palace during the winter transfer window.
