Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio Finale: Vienna Concert Review | Scott Colley & Brian Blade

March 1, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Wolfgang Muthspiel concluded a 41-performance run at Vienna’s Konzerthaus on Friday, February 27th, 2026, with a performance alongside bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade, marking the finale of a tour supporting their latest album, Tokyo.

The concert, held in the Mozart-Saal, featured material from Tokyo, the trio’s third studio collaboration, alongside selections from their 2020 album, Angular Blues and a solo piece by Muthspiel from his 2024 release, Etudes/Quietudes. According to a review in the Austrian newspaper Kurier, the performance showcased a “deep musical connection” developed through consistent collaboration.

The setlist included the track “Flight,” described as melodically fluid, and a rendition of “Weill You Wait,” a jazz homage to composer Kurt Weill, noted for its subtle and chamber-like qualities. The trio as well performed “Strumming” and “Hüttengriffe,” the latter described as a playful exploration of musical simplicity. A highlight of the evening was a rendition of Paul Motian’s “Abacus,” featuring electric guitar effects and a bluesy texture.

Muthspiel, a Steiermark-born guitarist who spent 16 years in Boston and New York before returning to Austria, has performed at the Konzerthaus 41 times, according to the Kurier review. The performance drew a “blessed audience” and was characterized by “cheerful and lively energy,” creating a foundation for improvisation.

The Muthspiel Trio is scheduled to continue touring in the coming months, with dates to be announced on Muthspiel’s website.
