Spartanburg, S.C. – Wofford College men’s soccer secured a 1-1 draw against Georgia State University on Saturday, September 21, after a second-half equalizer from defender Adam Celik. The tie marks Wofford’s first regular-season draw as October 8,2024,against Wake Forest.
The match saw a flurry of action in the opening minutes, with Wofford creating several opportunities. Nathan Simes initiated a rapid sequence, finding Stewart Patnaud, whose shot was blocked. The rebound led to a bicycle kick attempt by Kalle Rahbek, also denied, before Simes had another shot blocked, all within 20 seconds.Georgia State countered, taking a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute with a goal from their attacker.
The second half featured sustained pressure from both sides. Georgia State had early chances from wing crosses, while Wofford’s wingers were met with strong defensive resistance. In the 57th minute, Samuel Byron was fouled just outside the box, setting up a free kick for Kalle Rahbek, which struck the crossbar. The ensuing scramble resulted in Adam Celik scoring his first career goal to level the match.
Georgia State pressed for a go-ahead goal in the following 15 minutes,but the Terrier defense held firm. Both teams battled for a late winner in the final five minutes, but neither could break the deadlock.
Celik’s goal gives him three points on the season. Wofford recorded six shots in the first half, slightly below their season average of 7.5 shots per game.
Wofford will next host Queens University at Snyder Field on Tuesday, September 30, at 7:00 p.m. the match will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+.
