Warriors Add Veteran Al Horford, ⁢Signaling All-In Push ⁢for‍ Another Championship with Curry

SAN FRANCISCO – The Golden State Warriors have agreed to a two-year, $11.6 million contract with free agent Al Horford, a move signaling a renewed commitment to contention as Stephen Curry enters what could be the ⁢final chapter of his storied career. The deal, finalized this summer under General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., includes a player option on the second season and a 15% trade kicker.

The acquisition of Horford addresses a key need⁤ for the Warriors: a capable veteran ‍stretch ‍center. head Coach Steve Kerr emphasized⁢ the importance of finding⁣ a player who could alleviate pressure on Draymond Green and Curry, stating, “Mike’s been looking for a player like him his entire time here. Not just a pick-and-pop ‍guy, but a legitimate big, who can‍ make Draymond’s job easier, who can make Steph’s job easier. It’s really hard to find those ‍guys.”

Dunleavy prioritized both resolving Jonathan‌ Kuminga’s contract dispute and bolstering ‍the roster with veterans fitting the Warriors’ established ‌system. While Kuminga’s ⁣negotiations were complex, the pursuit of Horford was remarkably focused. According ‍to team sources, Horford was the “absolute‌ 1A” target, with no ⁤other free agent seriously considered. The Warriors ⁣also showed interest in Luke Kornet, but he signed ‍with the San Antonio Spurs after‌ exceeding their budgetary constraints.

Horford expressed enthusiasm for the prospect, saying, “I⁣ felt like there was a lot ‍of upside‍ in this thing, so I just had to wait it⁤ out.” He added, “For me, it’s a privilege to have this opportunity and to ‍be here…I do understand⁣ that there’s a lot that comes with‍ it. there’s a lot of challenges. But I’m pretty excited.”

The contract’s structure aligns Horford’s deal with those of Curry, Jimmy Butler, and green, possibly setting the stage for a final two-year run at championship contention for the core group. While the Warriors’ front office continues to ‍plan for the future, the immediate focus is maximizing the current ⁢window with a team built around‌ its established stars.
