Winter Storm in North Carolina: Road Conditions, Travel Alerts, and Traffic Cameras

February 4, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — As winter approaches, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is actively preparing for potential winter storms adn is urging drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads. NCDOT routinely advises motorists to avoid travel during severe weather events to ensure safety.

NCDOT’s preparations include a robust fleet of snowplows and spreaders equipped with brine-making capabilities. Brine, a salt water mixture, is applied to roads before a storm to prevent ice from bonding to the pavement, making snow removal more efficient. According to NCDOT, over 165,000 tons of salt are stockpiled across the state, along with over 500,000 gallons of brine. NCDOT Winter Weather Prep

“Our crews work around the clock to keep roads as safe as possible during winter storms,” said NCDOT Secretary Mike Calabrese in a recent press release. NCDOT Winter Weather Prep “However, the best way to stay safe is to avoid driving in hazardous conditions.”

drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling. NCDOT provides real-time traffic data through several resources:

  • DriveNC.gov: This website offers a live map of road closures, incidents, and winter weather conditions. DriveNC.gov
  • @NCDOT on Twitter: NCDOT provides updates on road conditions and closures via its official Twitter account. @NCDOT on Twitter
  • NCDOT Mobile App: The DriveNC app provides access to the same information as the website, directly on your smartphone. NCDOT Mobile App

NCDOT also offers these safety tips for winter driving:

  • Slow down: Reduce your speed and increase your following distance.
  • Be aware of black ice: Black ice is a thin, clear layer of ice that can be challenging to see.
  • Brake gently: avoid sudden braking, wich can cause skidding.
  • Turn on your headlights: Headlights improve visibility, even during daylight hours.
  • Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle: Include items like a flashlight, blankets, snacks, water, and a first-aid kit.

In the event of a road closure, NCDOT advises drivers to not attempt to drive around barriers. Roads are closed for a reason, and attempting to bypass closures can be dangerous and illegal. Stay informed and prioritize safety during winter weather events.
