Windows and Valve Partner with Radeon to Make Driver Development Open Source

July 30, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Valve and Microsoft are providing financial backing to open-source developers working on Mesa Radeon Vulkan drivers, commonly known as RADV, according to reporting by GinjFo. The funding initiative aims to accelerate the development of graphics performance and Linux gaming compatibility.

Financial backing from major platforms

Valve and Microsoft have chosen to support the independent engineers who maintain and improve open-source graphics drivers for AMD hardware. According to GinjFo, the financial contributions target the Mesa RADV stack, which translates Vulkan API calls for Radeon graphics cards on Linux-based operating systems.

Valve relies heavily on the RADV driver for SteamOS and the Steam Deck handheld console, both of which run on Arch Linux-based software and AMD processors. Microsoft’s involvement stems from its expanding interest in cross-platform tooling, cloud gaming infrastructure, and Linux-based developer environments such as Windows Subsystem for Linux.

Impact on open-source graphics development

The financial support allows independent driver developers to dedicate more time to optimization, bug fixes, and day-one hardware support for new AMD GPU architectures. GinjFo notes that open-source graphics stacks traditionally rely on volunteer contributions or corporate engineering teams employed directly by hardware vendors like AMD.

External funding from platform holders like Valve and Microsoft helps stabilize development cycles for the RADV driver. This ensures consistent performance improvements across various Linux distributions, emulation projects, and native PC ports.
