Windows 11 26H1: New PC Requirement for Update
Microsoft is preparing to release the first test build of Windows 11 26H1, but access will be limited to systems with “specific silicon,” the company announced this week.
The initial build, released on February 9, 2026, for the Dev Channel, is version 25H2 (10.0.26300.7760). A slightly earlier build, 25H2 (10.0.26220.7755), is available in the Beta Channel, and the Release Preview Channel features version 25H2 (10.0.26200.7840), released February 10, 2026. A Canary Channel build, 26H1 (10.0.28020.1546), was released on February 4, 2026.
The move signals a more targeted approach to Windows 11 development, focusing on compatibility and performance with particular hardware configurations. While Microsoft did not specify which silicon is supported, the announcement suggests a closer collaboration with hardware manufacturers to optimize the operating system for specific processors and chipsets.
Windows 11, initially released in October 2021, represents a significant redesign of the Windows operating system. Features include a redesigned Start menu and taskbar, with the Start button centered by default. The operating system was positioned by Microsoft as an open system, contrasting with Apple’s more controlled ecosystem, in an effort to attract developers.
The upcoming 26H1 release builds on the foundation of Windows 11, with Microsoft promising continued improvements to productivity, gaming, and the Microsoft Store. The initial announcement of Windows 11 in June 2021 highlighted the OS as a free upgrade for Windows 10 users meeting the minimum system requirements.
Currently, Windows 11 supports 88 languages, including English (United States), Spanish (Spain and Mexico), French (France and Canada), German, Italian, and many others.
