Star Trek legend William Shatner, 95, and his 61-year-old daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, have revealed they both battled stage 4 cancer at the same time and are now cancer-free, according to People.

The simultaneous health battles began when Melanie Shatner Gretsch underwent chemotherapy for stage 4 breast cancer. Shortly after, in June 2023, William Shatner received his own stage 4 malignant melanoma diagnosis after the cancer spread to his lungs and brain. The actor underwent surgery to remove a tumor on his face, followed by two years of immunotherapy to treat the disease in his lungs and brain. By late 2024, both father and daughter were officially declared cancer-free.
Reflecting on the recovery process, William Shatner noted the importance of mental engagement. “I’m healthier now than I’ve been in years,” Shatner said, according to People. “The brain is like a muscle. It feeds on activity.” The duo leveraged mutual family support throughout their treatments and are now preparing to launch a podcast titled No Time but Now, where they plan to interview health experts and fellow survivors.

The creative team behind the current Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has attempted to secure William Shatner for a guest appearance since the show launched, according to reporting by The Direct. The proposed storyline would feature the actor returning as James T. Kirk, playing a version of the character who remained in Depression-era New York with Joan Collins’ character Edith Keeler, following the events of the classic TOS episode “The City on the Edge of Forever.”
William Shatner last played the character on screen at age 60 in the 1994 feature film Star Trek Generations, in which the character met his canonical demise. Addressing the repeated overtures at a Vancouver convention in 2025, Shatner explained the high threshold for any potential franchise comeback. “I have been asked to come back as Kirk so many times. If Kirk is going to come back, it has to mean something,” Shatner said, as reported by The Direct.
