Wildfires in Gironde and Landes: Over 30,000 Hectares Burned, 140,000 Evacuated Near Bordeaux

July 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Emergency management authorities have confirmed that more than 140,000 residents and tourists have been evacuated across the Gironde and Landes departments as extreme meteorological conditions fuel the uncontained blazes.

Evacuations Reach Bordeaux’s Edge

The aggressive advance of the wildfire front prompted the preventive evacuation of seven distinct communes situated immediately north and east of Bordeaux. Regional data compiled from Le Monde indicates that the cumulative evacuation tally has reached 140,000 individuals across the twin departments of Gironde and Landes. Local municipalities are coordinating emergency sheltering operations, while civil protection units establish perimeter defenses to protect critical municipal infrastructure from the advancing firestorm.

Further south in the Landes department, the situation remains critical. Sud Ouest reports that active fire fronts have advanced to the immediate vicinity of Sanguinet, consuming upwards of 3,000 hectares locally and destroying approximately one hundred residential structures.

Surpassing the 30,000-Hectare Benchmark

According to field dispatch data published by Libération, the total charred surface area surpassed 22,000 hectares earlier in the operational cycle before crossing the catastrophic 30,000-hectare benchmark confirmed by BFM.

Strained Transit Arteries and Regional Toll

As response teams work around the clock to establish firebreaks around major population centers, the priority remains life safety and the prevention of further structural loss in the path of the flames.
