Why the Golden State Warriors Struggle to Trade Kristaps Porziņģis

Why the Golden State Warriors Struggle to Trade Kristaps Porziņģis

October 21, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Entering the 2026-27 NBA season with nearly $90 million in salary sidelined due to pre-existing injuries, the Golden State Warriors are actively exploring trade possibilities for center Kristaps Porziņģis, according to a report by ESPN. Porziņģis has been dealing with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome over the past two seasons and is seriously contemplating stepping away from basketball for good, according to reporting from Shams Charania of Bleacher Report.

Health and Salary Caps Limit Porziņģis Trade Value

That health uncertainty leaves Porziņģis with no positive trade value as a player right now, meaning any acquiring team would view future on-court minutes as a bonus rather than an expectation. Making matters more difficult, the Warriors gave him a $3 million guarantee for the 2027-28 season when re-signing him this offseason, creating a cumbersome financial figure in the apron era. By using the taxpayer mid-level exception on De’Anthony Melton, the Warriors are hard-capped at the second apron with only about $350,000 in room underneath it. That leaves Golden State unable to absorb a larger salary without sending out matching players. While many 2026 free agents cannot be traded until December 15 or January 15, Porziņģis avoids that restriction because the Warriors structured his deal as an extension without a raise large enough to trigger a six-month wait. Even so, cbssports.com reported that waiting until December 15 for the right player combination to become tradable might leave the Warriors too late to salvage the current campaign.

What options do the Golden State Warriors have for a Kristaps Porzingis trade with limited finances?

Evaluating Potential Destinations

To overcome these roadblocks, several roster configurations are viable options for Golden State. One option involves the Milwaukee Bucks, who signed Myles Turner in an unsuccessful effort to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo. Turner carries three expensive seasons left on his contract, but swapping him for a shorter Porziņģis contract and Moses Moody for salary matching offers Milwaukee a way to open minutes for developing center Kel’El Ware. Because the Bucks do not control their own first-round pick, they carry little short-term risk in taking on Porziņģis’ health situation. However, adding Turner would effectively eliminate max-level cap space for the Warriors next summer. Alternatively, the Charlotte Hornets have shown a willingness to take on money and draft capital, as they did by absorbing Dorian Finney-Smith’s contract for three second-round picks. The Hornets possess mid-sized contracts attached to playable veterans like Royce O’Neale, Grant Williams, and Grayson Allen, any of whom could help the Warriors turn inactive salary into active rotation pieces using Golden State’s three tradable second-round picks. A third path involves the New Orleans Pelicans, serving as a conceptual landing spot for using Porziņģis‘ salary paired with draft picks to acquire wings like Trey Murphy or Herb Jones. Yet, as cbssports.com noted, making a multi-first-round pick trade for a player like Murphy requires proof of concept that Stephen Curry and a recovering Jimmy Butler can keep Golden State in the top-six race before committing precious future assets.
