Norman, OK – Oklahoma Sooners head coach Patty Gasso anticipates a breakout senior season for pitcher Sydney Berzon, believing the transfer from LSU is poised to reach her full potential within the program. Gasso expressed confidence that Berzon is on track to achieve the level of success she has long envisioned for herself, culminating during her final year of collegiate softball.
Berzon’s arrival adds depth and a unique skillset to an already formidable Oklahoma pitching staff. While fellow transfer Miali Guachino, formerly of ole Miss, has demonstrated a knack for strikeouts in fall scrimmages – recording four against Oklahoma teammates and five against Oklahoma City University – Berzon has consistently generated ground ball opportunities for the defense. This dynamic provides Gasso and pitching coach Jennifer Rocha with versatile options in the circle.
The Sooners’ coaching staff sees untapped potential in Berzon, cultivated throughout her time at LSU. Gasso stated, “She’s going to become what she always thought she could become,” adding, “And what’s going to be marvelous about it, it’s happening here at Oklahoma in her senior year. So I’m just glad we’re all going to be here to witness it.”
Oklahoma’s fall practices and early scrimmages have offered glimpses of Berzon’s capabilities, setting the stage for a pivotal 2024 season. The team is scheduled to begin play in February, with Berzon expected to play a key role in the Sooners’ pursuit of another national championship.
