Mostafa Mohamed: Egypt’s Reliable,Yet Underutilized,Number 9
By Ahmed Kamal, sports journalist at “Ahl Masr”
The egyptian national team heavily relies on players from its domestic league – primarily El Ahly, zamalek, and Pyramids – supplemented by a core of stars playing in Europe, including mohamed Salah (Liverpool) and Omar marmoush (Manchester city). Striker Mostafa mohamed occupies a key position within this structure, positioned just behind those established European talents.
Egypt currently faces a shortage of strong options at the number 9 position, leading to Mohamed’s consistent role as a starter for the past four to five years. While largely unchallenged, national team coach Hossam Hassan has recently attempted to foster competition by integrating Osama Faisal, from Bank El Ahly and the Olympic team, even starting him in critically importent World Cup qualifying matches in place of Mohamed.
A contributing factor to Mohamed’s relatively low goal tally with the national team, according to Kamal, is the playing style of Egypt’s wingers. Both Salah and marmoush frequently prioritize individual scoring opportunities – Salah through driving runs and Marmoush with long-range shots – rather than consistently setting up the central striker. Despite this, Mohamed’s smart movement within the penalty area creates space and opportunities for those wingers to score.
Kamal believes Mohamed’s struggles at Nantes stem from a mismatch between expectations and his skillset. He describes Mohamed as a physically strong striker who excels in aerial duels and winning physical battles. His reputation in Egypt was built on his ability to effectively convert crosses with his heading ability.
Currently, three of Egypt’s biggest clubs – El Ahly, Zamalek (his former team), and Pyramids – are all interested in acquiring Mohamed. However, his high salary demands and his stated desire to continue playing in Europe present significant obstacles to a return to the Egyptian league.
