The Decision to Leave the Camp

The expedition’s eighth episode brought a demanding stretch for the competing teams. Team Nordkapp lost their latest stage, leaving Dag-Inge Ulstein and Iselin Michelsen without immunities and facing a potential elimination battle alongside Cathrine Fossum, who had previously broken an earlier stage due to illness. Before the elimination match could begin against pre-qualified competitor Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen, Michelsen intervened.

«I have something to say,» Michelsen announced to the camp, according to the broadcast. «I don’t want to see any of my boys, who have helped me so much, leave from here. I’ve grown so fond of Cathrine too, and I want to see them go further. I have decided that my journey here ends now.»

Speaking to Dagbladet afterward, Michelsen clarified that the choice was deliberate rather than an impulsive reaction. Living outdoors for nine days without access to basic hygiene facilities or cosmetics brought underlying personal pressures to the surface.

Confronting Childhood Trauma on National Television

The core reason behind Michelsen’s exit tied directly to a long-standing psychological burden. She revealed that going bare-faced in front of strangers and television cameras triggered anxieties rooted in her middle school years.

«I don’t know how to say it, and it hasn’t come out earlier in the season, but I have a problem with going without makeup in front of a lot of people I don’t really know. And especially when it’s going on TV,» Michelsen explained. She noted that she suffered daily bullying regarding her appearance during her youth, which eventually prompted her family to relocate before high school.

«That led to us moving when I started high school, and I started wearing makeup. The bullying subsided, but had already had time to leave deep marks,» she said. While cosmetics served as a protective shield for years, maintaining that barrier became impossible under the remote conditions of the production.

«I had a plan to put on makeup in the tent before the camera team came and woke us up, but already on day two I realized that wasn’t going to work. It made me feel very naked and that I didn’t have control. I was stripped of everything very abruptly, and never had time to land in or reflect on any of it,» Michelsen added.

Reflections on Exposure Therapy and Regret

Enduring over a week without washing her face or applying cosmetics eventually forced Michelsen past her breaking point. Overwhelmed by the loss of her usual coping mechanism, she chose to step down so her teammates could advance.

Looking back months later, however, the participant views the intense environment from a different perspective. She describes the grueling expedition as an accidental form of exposure therapy.

«’71’ was an insane exposure therapy for me, and when I got home and got to reflect a bit, it was like something just let go in me,» Michelsen stated. «It’s been half a year, and now I go without makeup everywhere without thinking about it. It’s completely weird to think about how it was before, and that this was what it took.»

Despite the psychological breakthrough experienced after returning home, the realization brought a fresh wave of mixed emotions about cutting her time on the show short. «Now I wish I hadn’t quit, and I think it sucks that I wasn’t able to stand in it,» she reflected.

With Michelsen out of the running, the remaining cast members must handle the physical and mental demands of the ongoing expedition without her, leaving the competitors to face the rigors of the Norwegian wilderness alone.
