tottenham Hotspur’s home form is under scrutiny as thay struggle to translate Premier League potential into results at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, raising questions about tactical approach and player confidence.
Spurs have managed only seven goals in six home league games this season, a concerning statistic surpassed only by Burnley‘s even poorer record. Their attacking output is further highlighted by a low 18 shots on target, fewer then all but one other team in the league.
A key area of concern, according to analysis by Danny Murphy of BBC Sport, is the midfield configuration. “When you look at the make-up of their team, the midfield isn’t particularly creative,” Murphy stated. This lack of creativity is reflected in the team’s statistics; Spurs have completed just four throughballs all season, a stark contrast to league leaders Arsenal’s 43.
the forward line also appears to be lacking in conviction. Murphy observed, “It feels like none of their frontline are playing with any confidence. They look a bit lightweight in the front area of the pitch.”
The contrast between home and away performances is notable. Away from home, Spurs have adopted a more pragmatic approach, focusing on set-plays, counter-attacks, and defensive solidity. “Away from home, that doesn’t matter as much, as they can be more pragmatic – look for the set-plays, play on the counter and be hard to beat – and they don’t have the expectation of the 60,000 home supporters to go after teams and really try to win games,” Murphy explained.
This freedom from expectation allows players to operate at their own pace and be pleasant with periods of possession. ”That makes a difference to players. Away from home, you can kind of do it at your own pace and it is indeed OK for you to be without the ball,” Murphy added. Their away win at Everton serves as an example of this more comfortable style.
However,at home,a lack of cohesion in the front three, coupled with inconsistent midfield setups – fluctuating between a single number 10 and a three-man midfield – contributes to a disjointed performance. Murphy described the situation as “a little bit higgledy-piggledy.”
Ultimately, this instability leads to a cautious approach at home, with players seemingly hesitant to take risks and lacking the “belief or confidence to get on the ball.”
