Ben Whittaker to Fight Benjamin Gavazi in Matchroom Boxing Debut
BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND – ben Whittaker, the 2020 British Olympic silver medalist, will make his debut under the Matchroom Boxing banner this Saturday at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, England. The 10-round bout against Benjamin Gavazi marks the start of a new chapter for the highly touted light heavyweight prospect.
Whittaker signed with Matchroom Boxing in October after his contract with Boxxer concluded, ending a period where his career trajectory was linked to the Sky Sports broadcast deal. Promoter Eddie Hearn has long sought to sign Whittaker, previously attempting to do so after the 2020 Olympics, but Whittaker initially chose Boxxer due to its partnership with sky Sports. With Sky Sports not renewing its deal with Boxxer this past summer,Whittaker became a free agent, allowing hearn to finally secure the fighter he considers a “generational talent.”
This fight represents Whittaker’s first since the promotional deal and a homecoming for the birmingham native. Whittaker turned professional in July 2022 and has quickly garnered attention for his skill and potential.
Hearn has repeatedly expressed his high opinion of Whittaker, calling him “phenomenal” and proclaiming his signing as ”the greatest” that could be made in boxing today – all before Whittaker has even stepped into the ring under the Matchroom banner. The bout will be available to stream on DAZN at 2 p.m. ET.
