Where Is Anthony Robinson Now? Inside the Life of the Dating App Killer
Anthony Robinson, ‘Dating App Killer,’ Serving Life in Virginia After 2021 Murders
Anthony Eugene Robinson, known as the ‘Shopping Cart Killer,’ is serving life in Virginia for murdering two women, Allene ‘Beth’ Redmon and Tonita Smith. His case resurfaces after a Lifetime movie dramatizes the experience of Monica White, a woman who dated him before his arrest.
From Online Dating to Mass Murder: The Timeline of a Serial Killer
Robinson, from Virginia, met Monica White on the dating app Tagged in late 2020. Their relationship turned ominous during in-person meetings, with White later describing his behavior as ‘uncomfortable’ and ‘disturbing.’ By January 2021, she ended the relationship after incidents including heavy drinking and inappropriate conduct. Months later, Robinson was arrested in connection with the murders of Redmon and Smith, whose bodies were found in a wooded area in November 2021.
At his trial, jurors viewed motel surveillance footage depicting him entering a room with each woman on separate occasions and later leaving while pushing a shopping cart wrapped in a sheet. Investigators said both women had been connected to Robinson through online dating. In January 2025, a Rockingham County jury found Anthony Robinson guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated murder, and two counts of concealing a deceased body. However, Judge Bruce D. Albertson later vacated the two first-degree murder convictions at sentencing. Robinson was sentenced to life terms for the two aggravated murder convictions, plus five years for each of the two body-concealment charges.
The Role of True-Crime Media in Reviving Cold Cases
The renewed public interest in Robinson’s case stems from the Lifetime film The Dating App Killer: The Monica White Story, which premiered on Netflix this week. The movie, starring Lela Rochon as White and Jarod Joseph as Robinson, focuses on White’s experience and her realization that she had dated a serial killer. ‘I knew something was wrong with him,’ White later said.
Prison Life and Legal Implications for a ‘Shopping Cart Killer’
Robinson is currently incarcerated in Virginia after being sentenced to two life terms plus 10 years. He was also ordered to pay more than USD 205,000 in restitution. The ‘shopping cart’ moniker comes from the way investigators said Robinson moved the bodies of his victims.
