Wheelchair User Launches World’s First Inclusive Dating App for People with Disabilities

August 28, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Tomás Berthet, 25, who lives with spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, has launched Linkup, a free dating and community application designed specifically for individuals with disabilities. Available for iPhone and Android devices, the platform allows users to specify needs, ranging from accessibility requirements for meetings to sign language accommodation and service animal integration.

  • Targeted Accessibility: Linkup incorporates options for physical and sensory accommodation needs.
  • Platform Availability: Created by Tomás Berthet, the application is currently active with over 100 profiles and free for download on iPhone and Android.
  • Psychosocial Impact: Linkup seeks to connect people with disabilities and generate a space to make friends, have dates, and build bonds.

Addressing Social Barriers in Motor Impairment

For individuals with conditions like spina bifida, daily social participation often involves managing barriers that go beyond a staircase, inaccessible transport, or a technological tool that is not adapted. Tomás Berthet noted that for some people with disabilities, it could be more difficult to meet people, have dates, or generate certain bonds.

Linkup operates on a matching architecture where users can see profiles and show interest; when the interest is mutual, a match is generated and they can begin to interact. However, the platform allows users to incorporate information about different needs, such as the use of sign language, a service animal, or accessibility requirements for a meeting. This design seeks to provide a concrete solution to one of the barriers faced by people with disabilities.

Technological Development and Community Scale

The creation of Linkup emerged from personal observation. Berthet sought out people who could help him in the different areas necessary to develop the application, especially in design and technological development. This process involved learning about technology, marketing, business, communication, and how to build a community around a product.

Current adoption metrics indicate over 100 active profiles on the platform. The goal is for the app to become a platform where people can meet, make friends, have dates, share experiences, and be part of a community.
