WhatsApp to Get Automatic Message Translation on iOS: Languages & How it Works
WhatsApp is rolling out automatic message translation for iOS users in a beta release, expanding its multilingual communication features. The update, currently available through Apple’s TestFlight program, builds on existing manual translation options and aims to streamline cross-language conversations.
Currently, WhatsApp allows users to manually translate messages by selecting the text and choosing a target language. This feature utilizes Apple’s APIs, processing data directly on the device to maintain complete-to-end encryption. The new automatic translation feature will allow users to set a preferred translation within chat information settings, specifying both the source and target languages.
To facilitate offline translation, the system requires users to download specific language packs. This approach ensures immediate translation even without an internet connection, keeping data contained within the device. WhatsApp will initially support 21 languages, including Arabic, Dutch, English (UK and US), French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese (both mainland China and Taiwan), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
Compatibility with the automatic translation feature may vary depending on the iOS version installed on a user’s device. Older iOS versions may not include all the necessary language packs, though Apple updates are expected to broaden compatibility over time. Once activated, the automatic translation will apply to incoming messages in selected chats, with users retaining the ability to view the original text or remove the translation through contextual options. The functionality will continue to leverage Apple’s APIs, preserving encryption throughout the process.
The feature will be available in both individual and group chats, though with limitations in group settings. Automatic translation in groups will function correctly only if all participants use the same language. Messages sent in different languages will not be translated, even if supported. The feature is not currently planned for implementation within WhatsApp Channels.
WhatsApp, owned by Meta, currently has over 2 billion users in more than 180 countries, according to the App Store listing. The app emphasizes privacy with end-to-end encryption for messages and calls. WhatsApp’s default language is set by the user’s device settings, but as of recent Android updates, users can change the app’s language independently of the system language, a feature not yet available on iOS without the new update.
