WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature allowing group administrators and members to share recent chat history with new joiners, addressing a long-standing user frustration with onboarding into active group conversations. The rollout, which began on February 19, 2026, enables the sharing of between 25 and 100 recent messages, providing context for newcomers without overwhelming them with extensive backlogs.
The feature aims to mitigate the disorientation often experienced when joining a busy WhatsApp group mid-conversation, where understanding references and ongoing discussions can be challenging. Instead of relying on manual screenshots or lengthy recaps, users can now selectively share relevant portions of the chat log. According to WhatsApp’s announcement, this has been one of the platform’s “most requested features.”
Transparency is a key component of the implementation. When message history is shared, all group members receive a notification detailing the action, including timestamps and the identities of the sender(s) of the shared messages. The shared messages themselves are visually distinguished from ongoing conversation threads, clarifying their origin and relevance.
Administrators retain control over the feature, with the ability to disable Group Message History entirely for their groups. However, even with the feature enabled, administrators can still independently share message history with new members. Members can initiate the sharing of history, but only if the administrator has not disabled the functionality.
WhatsApp emphasizes that the feature maintains the platform’s commitment to user privacy through conclude-to-end encryption. Shared message history is protected by the same encryption protocols as all other WhatsApp communications, ensuring confidentiality within the group.
The introduction of Group Message History follows the recent release of other new group chat features in January 2026, including member tags, text stickers, and event reminders. These updates collectively aim to enhance the functionality and user experience within WhatsApp groups.
The rollout of Group Message History is gradual, and not all users will have immediate access to the feature. WhatsApp has not provided a specific timeline for full deployment.
