Winfield House, America’s London Residence, Offers a Glimpse Behind Embassy Walls
LONDON – Winfield House, the official residence of the U.S.Ambassador to the United Kingdom, is offering a rare look inside its opulent walls, revealing a surprising blend of grandeur and understated charm. The historic estate, often dubbed America’s “party house” in London, has been the backdrop for countless diplomatic events and social gatherings, but remains largely unknown to the public.
Located in Regent’s Park, Winfield House provides a unique window into American diplomatic life and the surprisingly tranquil existence within one of London’s most exclusive neighborhoods. While the 12-acre property boasts a rich history and lavish interiors, current Ambassador Jane D. Hartley and her husband, Mr.Ward, emphasize a sense of escape and accessibility, despite its high-profile role. The residence, purchased by the U.S. government in 1957,has become a key venue for strengthening Anglo-American relations and showcasing American culture.
Originally built for Barbara Hutton, the Woolworth heiress, in the 1930s, Winfield house was designed by architect William Delano. The estate features a main house with 19 bedrooms, extensive gardens, and a staff of around 100, catering to the ambassador’s official and personal needs.Ambassador Hartley describes the atmosphere as a surprising contrast to its central London location, noting, “You would never know you’re in the center of London.”
Recent glimpses of the residence, including photos featuring designer Tom Ford with Cara Delevingne and Clara Paget, have sparked public interest in the property’s history and current use. While the estate is undeniably extraordinary, Mr. Ward jokingly points to the driveway as a minor drawback, stating it’s “big enough for big limousines but you couldn’t get a brigade of guards walking up and things. It’s not like the Mall.”
Winfield House continues to serve as a vital hub for diplomatic activity, hosting events that range from formal state dinners to more intimate gatherings aimed at fostering collaboration between the U.S. and the UK. The residence remains a symbol of the enduring partnership between the two nations, offering a unique blend of American hospitality and British tradition.
