Kyla Scanlon Finds Inspiration in Richard Bach‘s ‘Jonathan Livingston Seagull‘
Content creator Kyla Scanlon recently shared a deeply personal connection to Richard bach’s Jonathan Livingston Seagull, citing it as one of her favorite books. Scanlon, known for her online commentary on culture and media, revealed the book’s enduring message resonates with her understanding of leadership, belief, and sustaining purpose.
The 1970 novella tells the story of a seagull striving to transcend the limitations imposed by his flock, learning to fly with a passion and skill beyond conventional expectations. Scanlon explained the book explores themes of overcoming self-doubt and societal constraints, and also the challenges of maintaining a message after an inspirational figure is gone. “It’s kind of a fable about this seagull who really wants to fly despite everybody telling him, like, ‘You’re not going to be able to. You’re lame and dumb.’ But he does learn, and he teaches everyone else to fly,” Scanlon said. She further noted the book’s poignant exploration of what happens when the initial inspiration fades and the importance of remembering why one began a journey. “It’s a nice reminder of what it takes to sustain belief and keep a message going beyond the leader.”
Jonathan Livingston Seagull has sold over seven million copies worldwide and continues to inspire readers with its allegorical tale of self-discovery and the pursuit of one’s potential. Bach,a former flight instructor, drew upon his own experiences with aviation to craft the narrative, imbuing it with a sense of freedom and the power of individual ambition.
