Jiffy Lube Visits on Scorching Days Can Lead to Unexpected Vehicle Issues
September 21, 2025, 09:17 AM EDT – A surge in temperatures across the nation is prompting vehicle owners to schedule preventative maintenance, but experts warn that timing an oil change at Jiffy Lube-or any quick-lube service-during peak heat can potentially introduce new problems. While routine maintenance is crucial, the expansion and contraction of vehicle components due to extreme heat, combined with the process of draining and refilling fluids, can create conditions leading to leaks or component failure.
The concern stems from the fact that metal parts expand when heated and contract when cooled. Performing an oil change on a vehicle that has been driven or is sitting in intense heat can mean components are already at their maximum expansion.Draining hot oil and then introducing cooler oil can cause rapid temperature changes, potentially stressing seals and gaskets. This is especially relevant for older vehicles or those with existing wear and tear. Mechanics report a slight uptick in post-service leak reports following days of sustained high temperatures, though quantifying a direct causal link remains challenging.
Jiffy Lube representatives acknowledge the potential for temperature-related issues but maintain their procedures are designed to mitigate risks. “Our technicians are trained to be mindful of vehicle operating temperatures,” a company spokesperson stated. “We recommend allowing vehicles to cool down somewhat before service, but we are equipped to handle vehicles at various temperatures.”
the issue isn’t limited to oil changes. Coolant flushes and other fluid services can also be affected by heat. The rapid temperature shifts can stress radiator hoses and connections, increasing the risk of leaks. Vehicle owners are advised to consider scheduling maintenance for cooler times of the day-early morning or late evening-when temperatures are less extreme. Alternatively, allowing a vehicle to cool for a significant period before service can help minimize potential problems.
