Western Europe Records Hottest June on Record, Copernicus Data Shows
Western Europe recorded its hottest June ever recorded, according to data released by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).
An Unprecedented Two-Month Heat Wave Across Western Europe
Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, stated that the figures reflect the “exceptional persistence of heat” in the region, which has suffered through four separate heatwaves since May.
Countries including Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the United Kingdom experienced significantly drier conditions than average during July. Soil moisture levels across Western Europe dropped well below the lows recorded during the severe drought of 2022. “As soils dry out, they lose their ability to provide natural cooling, allowing heat to build more readily,” Burgess explained, noting how heat and drought are increasingly reinforcing one another.
Infrastructure Strain and Environmental Impacts
The prolonged high temperatures and lack of rainfall have dramatically lowered river flows across major European waterways. The Seine, Rhine, and Danube rivers have all faced critical drops in water levels, disrupting regional transport, agricultural irrigation, and energy production. In Hungary, low water levels exposed the dry riverbed of the Danube near the Paks nuclear power plant.

Global Sea Surface Temperatures and Wider Climate Drivers
Alongside continental heat extremes, global sea surface temperatures also reached historic highs in July. Copernicus reported that the average temperature across oceans outside the polar regions hit 20.96 degrees Celsius (69.73 Fahrenheit), eclipsing the previous record set in 2023. Carlo Buontempo, director of Copernicus, described a developing El Niño in the equatorial Pacific as “very large” and potentially unprecedented in its strength.
While El Niño influences global patterns, climate scientists emphasize that human-induced greenhouse gas emissions remain the primary driver behind rising baseline temperatures. Joeri Rogelj, a climate scientist at Imperial College London, noted that “on a hotter planet, there will be more heatwaves, and they will become more intense.” As Europe grapples with the fallout of persistent climate extremes, communities must adapt to an altered environmental baseline that continues to test the limits of modern infrastructure.
